Rep. Engel Receives 100% Rating from Human Rights Campaign

Statement

Congressman Eliot Engel, a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, received a 100 percent rating by the Human Rights Campaign for his congressional voting record.

"We are a nation of equals, and there should be no exceptions. Members of the LGBT community should enjoy the same rights of full equality and inclusion as any other members of our society.

"As someone who voted against DOMA in 1996, I was pleased when the Supreme Court affirmed three lower courts' decisions to overturn same-sex marriage bans in Utah, Oklahoma, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Indiana. I also applauded President Obama's executive order prohibiting federal contractors from discriminating against job applicants or employees on the basis of sexual orientation.

"The Senate passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) last November, which would extend that ban to all employers, but House Republicans have refused to act. Their resistance is unwarranted and unnecessary.

"I will continue to fight against discriminatory legislation so long as any community in our society is denied their civil rights."
